About Five Nights at Freddy's

Five Nights at Freddy's is a point-and-click survival horror game developed and published by Scott Cawthon. Originally released on August 8, 2014, Five Nights at Freddy's places you in the role of Mike Schmidt, a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza — a family restaurant where animatronic characters perform for children during the day. After hours, these animatronics roam the building freely and will attack anyone they encounter. Your objective in Five Nights at Freddy's is to survive from midnight until 6 AM across five increasingly difficult nights. You are confined to the security office and must rely on a network of surveillance cameras, two hallway lights, and two heavy security doors to keep the animatronics at bay. Every tool consumes electricity from a limited power supply, and once the power runs out, you are left defenseless. Five Nights at Freddy's became a massive cultural phenomenon, spawning sequels, novels, and a feature film. The game is praised for building dread through resource management and unpredictable enemy behavior rather than relying on graphic violence.

How to Play Five Nights at Freddy's

Security Cameras

You monitor the animatronics through a system of security cameras placed throughout Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Flipping between camera feeds lets you track where each animatronic is and predict their next move. Using cameras drains power, so you must balance surveillance with conservation.

Doors and Lights

The office has two doorways — left and right — each with a door button and a light button. The hall lights reveal whether an animatronic is standing in the blind spot just outside. Closing a door blocks entry completely but consumes power rapidly, so you only close them when a threat is confirmed.

Power Management

Everything you do in Five Nights at Freddy's uses power: cameras, lights, and doors all draw from the same limited supply. If power drops to zero, the lights go out, the doors open, and Freddy Fazbear will appear at the left door playing a music-box jingle before delivering a jumpscare. Managing power usage is the core survival skill.

Night Progression

Each night lasts 8 minutes and 55 seconds in real time. The animatronics start slow on Night 1 but grow more aggressive on each successive night. Night 5 is the standard finale, but completing it unlocks a harder Night 6 and a fully customizable Night 7 (Custom Night) where you can set each animatronic's aggression from 0 to 20.

Characters in Five Nights at Freddy's

Freddy Fazbear

The main mascot of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. A brown bear wearing a top hat and bow tie, Freddy typically becomes active around Night 3. He follows a set path through the right side of the building and does not move when you watch him on camera. If power runs out, Freddy appears at the left door.

Bonnie the Bunny

A purple animatronic rabbit and the band's guitarist. Bonnie is one of the first to become active and approaches from the left side of the office. He can teleport between rooms, making him unpredictable.

Chica the Chicken

A yellow animatronic chicken who serves as backup singer. She wears a bib that reads "Let's Eat!" and carries a cupcake. Chica patrols the right side of the building and is often found lurking in the right door's blind spot.

Foxy the Pirate Fox

A red, partially damaged pirate fox who hides behind the curtain in Pirate Cove. If you fail to check on him regularly, Foxy sprints down the west hallway toward the office. Closing the left door in time blocks his charge, but this drains a portion of your power.

Golden Freddy

A secret, broken-down golden version of Freddy who can appear at random. He may appear as a slumped figure in the office or as an unusual poster on the cameras. In early versions of Five Nights at Freddy's, his jumpscare would crash the game entirely.

Tips for Five Nights at Freddy's

  1. Check Pirate Cove frequently — if you ignore Foxy for too long he will sprint to your office and drain a large chunk of power even if you close the door in time.
  2. Only close doors when you have confirmed a threat using the hall lights. Leaving doors shut when unnecessary wastes power in Five Nights at Freddy's.
  3. On later nights, minimize camera usage to save power. Quick checks on key rooms are better than long surveillance sessions.
  4. Listen carefully for audio cues. Footsteps, breathing, and laughter from Freddy all signal which animatronic is approaching and from which direction.
  5. If power runs out, do not panic — Freddy's jingle gives you a few more seconds. Sometimes the clock reaches 6 AM before he attacks.
  6. On Custom Night (Night 7), setting all animatronics to maximum difficulty (20/20/20/20) is considered one of the hardest challenges in the entire Five Nights at Freddy's series.
